Doctors at The Foot Institute – Calgary Downtown concentrate on the surgical and medical treatment of the foot and ankle. Our podiatrists devote an average of 10 years in higher education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to acquire a Bachelors Degree, and the 2nd four years in Medical School to acquire a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to regular medical school and in fact various podiatry programs are contained within these institutions. Upon achieving a Podiatric Medial Degree, Podiatrists at the Foot Institute carry out a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for another one to three years.
At the completion of the internship or residency, our Foot doctors have acquired thorough medical training with a focus on problems involving the ankles and feet. They are qualified to care for conditions stretching from usual afflictions for example, ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are even more sophisticated like clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at The Foot Institute have extensive surgical instruction which give them the practical experience necessary to conduct surgery on those issues that are best managed through surgical treatment.
Foot Institute Doctors furthermore have an extensive knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet receive as we walk, run or perform other activities. Knowing biomechanics and gait deviations makes it easy for a Podiatrist to design shoes and orthotics that can give pain relief and help prevent many troubles which the feet generally encounter.
